El DPP Registry is now operational and marks a new stage in the rollout of the Passaport digital de producte across Europe. For companies, this means gradually moving from regulatory analysis to preparing the systems, data and identifiers needed to implement DPPs in practice.
The European Commission refers to this infrastructure as the DPP Registry. Its role is to act as the European indexing service for Digital Product Passports linked to products that are subject to this obligation, providing a common infrastructure for their identification and verification across the EU market.
However, from a company’s perspective, registration is only one part of the process. Before a product reaches the DPP Registry, several operational questions need to be addressed: Where is the product data stored? How is the product identified? Who owns and maintains the information? How is it updated? How do internal systems connect? And how can all of this be managed at scale across thousands of product references?
This is where one of the main challenges of Digital Product Passport implementation begins.
From the physical product to the DPP Registry: what needs to happen?
To understand what the DPP Registry really means for a business, it helps to look at the full process from the physical product to its digital passport.
A DPP is not simply a product page connected to a QR code. It is part of a broader data architecture involving product information, identifiers, enterprise systems and multiple actors across the value chain.
Identify the Data Required for the Product
The first step is to determine which information must be included in the Digital Product Passport.
Requirements will vary depending on the product category and the applicable legislation. Depending on the sector, a DPP may include information about composition, materials, origin, substances of concern, environmental performance, durability, maintenance, repairability, recyclability or end-of-life instructions.
Locate the Information Across the Organisation
Some data may already exist in an ERP, while other information may be stored in a PIM or PLM system. Additional data may sit in technical documentation, production systems, sustainability platforms or supplier databases.
It is also common to find relevant information in spreadsheets or documents that are not yet connected to corporate systems.
Creating Digital Product Passports at scale therefore starts with building a clear map of all relevant data sources.
Identify the Product Correctly
Identifiers are a fundamental part of the DPP architecture because they link the physical item to its digital identity and corresponding passport.
Depending on the product category and applicable requirements, companies may need to work at model, batch or individual item level.
Create and Register the DPP
Once the data is structured and the identifiers are defined, the Digital Product Passport can be created.
When the relevant obligation applies, the economic operator must register the passport in the EU DPP Registry according to the applicable requirements.
The Registry stores unique identifiers, registration information and high-level metadata, creating a common reference within the European DPP ecosystem.
Maintain the Passport Throughout the Product Lifecycle
The process does not end once the DPP has been created and registered.
The information must remain accurate and available for the period established by the relevant legislation. This means companies need to consider how data will be updated when a specification, supplier or other relevant product information changes.
The real challenge of the DPP Registry is not the QR code, it is the data
The QR code is often the most visible element of a Digital Product Passport, but technically it is only a mechanism for accessing information.
When someone accesses a DPP, the system must be able to identify the product correctly, retrieve the appropriate data, apply the relevant access rules and display information that is reliable and up to date.
Within an organisation, this data may come from multiple sources, including ERP, PIM, PLM, MES, traceability systems, technical documentation, ESG platforms, suppliers or internal databases.
As a result, a company may be able to generate a QR code in minutes while still requiring months to prepare the infrastructure behind it.
Preparing for the DPP Registry starts with product data quality, structure and governance.
Why is interoperability so important?
The European Digital Product Passport system is designed to operate in an interoperable environment. This is important because a DPP may need to interact with different companies, platforms, authorities and actors across the value chain.
The technical framework behind the Registry includes elements such as identifiers, verification mechanisms, data models, semantic structures and other components designed to support information exchange between systems. For businesses, this means the DPP should not become another isolated data silo.
A future-ready architecture should allow product information to flow in and out of the DPP platform in a structured way, while connecting with corporate systems and external solutions.
This becomes particularly important for companies managing large product catalogues or complex supply chains.
Is the DPP Registry already available?
Yes, the European Commission launched the DPP Registry on 20 July 2026.
Economic operators can now begin registering their organisations, and the Commission also provides a dedicated testing environment.
This testing environment allows companies to explore workflows and functionalities without affecting real production data, making it especially useful for organisations that want to validate processes before DPP obligations apply to their product category.
The Commission also maintains a User Guide for Economic Operators, updated in August 2026, with practical guidance on organisation registration and on the registration and management of Digital Product Passports.
This makes 2026 an important year for companies to move from regulatory analysis to practical experimentation.
Which companies should start working on DPP readiness now?
The fact that the DPP Registry is already operational does not mean that every product sold in Europe currently requires a Digital Product Passport.
Obligations will be introduced progressively by product category and will depend on the specific legislation adopted for each sector.
One of the first major use cases will be batteries. From 18 February 2027, certain electric vehicle batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh within the relevant scope will need to have a battery passport.
The European Commission has also published guidance consolidating 71 data points related to the battery passport, helping companies understand which information they will need to collect and manage.
The ESPR Working Plan also identifies priority product groups such as iron and steel, textiles, tyres, aluminium, furniture, mattresses and certain ICT products. Their inclusion in the Working Plan does not automatically mean that all of them will require a DPP. Specific requirements will be defined later through the corresponding studies, impact assessments and legislative acts.
For this reason, even companies whose mandatory implementation dates may still be several years away should begin assessing the availability and quality of their product data now.
How to prepare your company for the DPP Registry
Preparation should not begin with technology alone. The first step is understanding the current state of product information across the organisation.
These are some of the key stages companies should consider.
Build an Inventory of Product Data Sources
Start by identifying where relevant product information is stored across ERP, PIM, PLM, production systems, technical documentation and supplier databases. It is also important to know who owns each data point and how often it changes.
Compare Existing Data With DPP Requirements
Once the available data is mapped, compare it with the requirements that apply — or are expected to apply — to your product category. This will help identify missing, unstructured or supplier-dependent information that may need additional work.
Design the Product Data Model
The next step is to organise dispersed information into a coherent structure. The goal is to define how each data point relates to the product and how it can be exchanged with other systems.
Connect Existing Systems
A scalable DPP implementation should avoid manual data transfer whenever possible. Integrating corporate systems directly with the DPP platform helps reduce errors, improve consistency and simplify ongoing maintenance.
Define an Identification Strategy
Companies need to determine how each physical product will be linked to its digital identity. Depending on the requirements, this may involve identifiers at model, batch or individual item level.
Automate DPP Creation and Updates
Manual management may work for a small pilot, but not for large product catalogues. DPP creation and updates should therefore be automated as much as possible using data from existing corporate systems.
Test the End-to-End Process Before It Becomes Mandatory
The DPP Registry testing environment allows companies to validate identifiers, data quality, integrations and internal workflows before moving into production. The goal is to make sure the complete data flow works from end to end.
